A la place de la porte Saint Martin un arc de triomphe fut érigé en 1674 par la ville de Paris, deux ans après celui de la porte Saint Denis. L'architecte Pierre Bullet dessina cet arc de triomphe d'une hauteur de 18 mètres. Trois portes le caractérisent : une de 5 mètres au centre et deux latérales de 2,5 destinés pour les piétons.

It takes its name from a former medieval gate which belonged to the city wall of Paris built by King Charles V in the 14th century. By the 17th century, the city had greatly expanded and the rampart was replaced by a tax wall.
